MARK OF THE BEAR
Tree marking by male black bears is common, especially during the summer mating season. They stand on their hind legs and scratch the trees with their claws and sometimes their teeth. It is uncertain whether bears mark trees to convey social information to other bears, though many researchers suspect it’s a dominance display—a way for one bear to let other bears in the area know they are in the neighborhood and how big they are. But they don’t always need a tree to make their mark. Manmade structures such as utility poles, footbridges, and even outbuildings may also be scratched or chewed. Bears also rub their backs against trees or other objects to relieve irritation caused by parasites (fleas, ticks) and to loosen their thick winter coats as they shed during summer. If a bear finds a good scratching tree, it may be used repeatedly for several years.
